How to Choose an SEO Company in Chicagoland: 12 Questions to Ask, and the Answers That Tell You Everything

How to Choose an SEO Company in Chicagoland: 12 Questions to Ask, and the Answers That Tell You Everything

The best SEO company in Chicagoland for your business is the one that can show you, on a live screen, where you rank today across Google, the Map Pack and AI search, explain exactly what they will change and in what order, report on leads rather than traffic, and let you log into every tool the numbers come from. Everything else on this page is how to find that company and tell it apart from the rest.

I have ranked businesses in the Chicago suburbs since 2003, and over those 23+ years I have sat across from hundreds of owners who were choosing an agency for the first time, or choosing again after a disappointing first try. The same questions come up every time, and the answers separate the firms that will grow your business from the ones that will send you a monthly PDF. This is the guide I wish every one of those owners had read first. It is written to help you choose well, whoever you choose, and I hold myself to every standard on it. You can check that on the results page.

What does an SEO company actually do?

A real SEO company makes your business the one customers find and choose when they search. In practice that is four connected jobs: making your website technically sound and structured so Google can rank it, building and maintaining a Google Business Profile that wins the three Map Pack spots where local calls come from, publishing content that answers the questions customers ask before they hire, and earning the reviews, citations and mentions that prove to Google and to AI engines that you are the credible choice. Then it measures all of that in leads and reports it plainly.

What it is not: a report. The report is how you check the work; it is not the work. If a firm’s deliverable is a dashboard and nothing on your site or profile changes month to month, you are paying for measurement of nothing. I break down the full scope in what SEO actually involves.

When should a business hire an SEO company?

Hire when you can name the searches you want to win and the calls are going to someone else. Signs it is time: your competitors hold the Map Pack for your money searches and you do not; your website exists but produces no calls you can trace; ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers name other businesses when asked for your service in your town; you have opened a new location or added a service nobody can find; or your reviews and profile have gone quiet. Any one of those is enough. Two is a business problem with a deadline.

It is also fine to hire before the pain, especially in growth markets. In towns like Plainfield, Oswego and Huntley, households are arriving with no established providers and choosing entirely from Google. The business that builds visibility first becomes the default for years. I cover that dynamic town by town on the service area pages.

What kinds of SEO companies are there?

Knowing which model you are talking to explains most of what you will hear.

TypeStrengthsBest for
Local specialistDeep knowledge of your towns and categories; direct access to the person doing the work; local reputation you can verifyLocal and regional businesses that want a practitioner, not a project manager
National agencyScale, process, large teamsMulti-state brands with big budgets and internal marketing staff
Web design shop with SEOStrong on the site itselfBusinesses whose main need is a rebuild, provided the shop can also rank it
FreelancerLow cost, flexibilityVery small scopes and single tasks
ConsultantInstalls the method inside your teamBusinesses with marketing staff who need direction

None of these is wrong. The mismatch is what costs money: a local plumber with a national agency pays for scale it cannot use; a five-location practice with a freelancer runs out of hours. I work as a local specialist and, for teams, as a consultant, and I compare the models honestly in agency, in-house or consulting.

What are the 12 questions to ask before you hire?

Ask all twelve. The answers, not the sales presentation, tell you who you are dealing with.

  1. Can you show me where I rank right now, across Google, the Map Pack and AI search? The right answer is a live screen, not a promise to run a report later. A firm that cannot pull up your Map Pack on a geo-grid and ask ChatGPT about your business during the first call is not equipped to move either.
  2. What exactly will you change in the first 90 days, in what order, and why? Look for specifics: the primary category on your profile, which service pages get rebuilt, which towns get pages, how reviews will be produced. Vague answers mean a generic plan.
  3. How do you measure success? The right answer is leads and calls attributed to search, then Map Pack position on a geo-grid, then Search Console clicks for your target searches, then profile engagement, then AI visibility. If the first answer is traffic or keyword counts, ask the question again. I explain each metric in how to read an SEO report.
  4. Will I be able to log into the tools the numbers come from? Yes is the only acceptable answer. Search Console, your Google Business Profile, analytics, the rank tracker. Your data should never be hostage.
  5. Who does the actual work, and will I talk to them? Ask who writes the pages, who edits the profile, who reads the reports. You want a name and direct access to it.
  6. What is your approach to Google Business Profile? The right answer covers category strategy, services, photos, posts, Q&A, review systems and spam removal, and treats the profile as the center of local search rather than an afterthought. The full method is in how I optimize a Google Business Profile completely.
  7. How do you build authority, and where do the links come from? Listen for earned links: citations, associations, partners, press, real reviews. Anyone who quotes you a number of links per month is describing a scheme, and Google penalizes schemes.
  8. What do you do about AI search, specifically? See the AI section below. A confident answer names the engines, explains how citations differ from rankings, and describes how they measure it.
  9. Do you guarantee rankings? The right answer is no, followed by what they do guarantee: the work, in order, reported transparently. Nobody controls Google, and the firms that say otherwise are describing something other than SEO.
  10. Can I see results from a business like mine? Real screenshots from real accounts, with numbers, ideally in your category or a nearby one. Mine are on the results page, and my industry playbooks cover 97 business types.
  11. What happens if I stop? Everything built should stay yours: the site, the content, the profile, the accounts. A firm that keeps your assets when you leave has told you something important.
  12. What does it cost, and what exactly is included? A clear number, a clear scope, and a clear list of what is extra. Covered below, and my own answer is on the packages and pricing page.

Ask Me the 12 Questions

What makes Chicagoland SEO different?

Chicagoland is not one market. It is 210 municipalities across DuPage, Will, Kane, Kendall and Cook counties, and rankings are decided town by town, sometimes block by block. A company that talks about ranking you “in Chicago” when your customers are in Naperville and Wheaton has not looked at where your calls come from.

Three local realities to test any firm on. First, proximity: Google favors businesses near the searcher, so the plan has to include the towns you serve, with real pages and real profile signals for each, not one citywide push. Second, competition varies wildly: DuPage is the tightest market in the state, Kendall is still forming, and the strategy that wins in Hinsdale is not the one that wins in Yorkville. Third, language: large parts of the west and southwest suburbs search in Spanish, and a bilingual presence captures demand English-only competitors never see. Ask how the company handles each. I wrote the county-by-county picture into every service area page, starting with Chicago.

Key takeaways

  • The best SEO company shows you live rankings on the first call, names specific changes in order, measures leads, and gives you access to every tool.
  • Chicagoland is 210 towns, not one market. The plan must cover your actual towns.
  • Ask about AI search specifically. A capable firm explains GEO and AEO and measures AI visibility with real prompts.
  • No one can guarantee rankings. What can be guaranteed is the work, in order, reported transparently.
  • Everything built should stay yours, with a clear price, scope and exit.

How much does SEO cost in Chicagoland?

Honest ranges for this market. Local SEO packages for a single-location business typically run from several hundred dollars a month for a focused Map Pack campaign to a few thousand for a full program covering many towns, content and AI search. Multi-location and highly competitive categories run higher. One-time work like a profile reinstatement or a website build is priced separately.

What should drive the number: how many keywords and towns you are targeting, how competitive your category is, how much content the site needs, and whether AI visibility is included. What should not drive it: vague “tiers” with no scope attached. A good proposal ties every dollar to a deliverable you can verify. To give you a concrete benchmark, my packages run from $749 to $4,395 a month with the scope of each spelled out on the packages and pricing page. Use it to sanity-check any proposal, mine included.

What should the contract say?

Terms are normal in SEO because results compound over months, and a six to twelve month commitment is reasonable when the scope is clear. What to look for in the paperwork:

  • Scope in writing. Which services, how many pages, how many posts, which towns, what is reported and when.
  • Ownership. Website, content, accounts and data belong to you during and after the engagement.
  • Access. You hold admin on your own Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics; the firm is added as a manager.
  • Reporting cadence stated as a commitment, not a courtesy.
  • An exit that is clean: notice period, handover of everything, no surprise fees.

Month-to-month options exist for some services; mine include managed AI visibility. Either way, the goal is a contract you would be comfortable showing another agency.

Does the company understand AI search?

This is the question that separates firms today. A growing share of your customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity or Copilot who to hire, and those answers name a handful of businesses and cite their sources. Being one of the named businesses is now part of SEO, and it is measurable.

What a capable company should be able to explain: the difference between GEO (getting named and cited in generated answers) and AEO (owning the direct answer in snippets, People Also Ask and voice); how they make a site readable to AI crawlers and quotable in answer-first structure; how business facts stay consistent everywhere so engines can corroborate you; and, critically, how they measure it. The right answer is a fixed set of real customer prompts tracked across the engines on a schedule, with screenshots of the actual answers. I do that with EZY.ai and explain the method in how I get businesses cited by AI and the concepts in GEO vs AEO. If a firm cannot describe how it measures AI visibility, it is not doing it.

How do you compare two proposals?

Put them side by side and score each on the same six lines:

LineWhat a strong proposal shows
DiagnosisSpecific findings about your site, profile and competitors, not a template
PlanNamed actions in order for the first 90 days and the year
Local depthYour actual towns, with a strategy for each
AI searchGEO and AEO included and measured, not mentioned in passing
MeasurementLeads first, geo-grid, Search Console, profile engagement, AI visibility; tool access confirmed
Proof and peopleReal results, real reviews, and the name of the person who will do the work

A proposal that wins five of six is worth a second conversation. Price matters, but a cheaper plan that skips diagnosis or measurement costs more, because you cannot tell whether it is working.

How long until results, and how will you know?

Google Business Profile fixes, starting with the primary category, usually move Map Pack rankings within two to six weeks. Competitive organic searches take six to twelve months. Neighborhood and long-tail searches move faster. A firm that promises page one in 30 days is describing something other than a competitive market, and a firm that says nothing will happen for a year is not front-loading the profile work that produces early wins.

How you will know: a monthly snapshot of leads, ranking movement and work completed, and a deeper review with geo-grid maps and a recorded video walkthrough every second month. If you cannot say what your SEO did last month, that is the report’s failure, not yours. My cadence is on the reporting page.

How do you switch agencies without losing rankings?

Switching is safe when it is done in order. Before you give notice, confirm you hold admin access to your Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics, your domain registrar and your hosting. Export any content you paid for. Ask the new firm to audit before the old one leaves, so nothing is deleted or changed in the gap. Keep tracking numbers and call-tracking lines live through the transition. Then give notice per the contract and hand over cleanly.

Rankings do not drop because you changed agencies. They drop when access is lost, pages are removed, or the profile is neglected during the handoff. Manage those three and the transition is invisible to Google. If you are switching, bring the old report to a strategy call and I will read it with you.

Ask the twelve questions in this guide: can they show live rankings across Google, the Map Pack and AI search; what will they change in 90 days; how do they measure success; can you log into the tools; who does the work; how do they handle Google Business Profile, authority and AI search; do they guarantee rankings; can they show results; what happens if you stop; and what does it cost. The answers tell you everything.
What is the best SEO company in Chicagoland?

Should an SEO company guarantee rankings?
No. Nobody controls Google, and firms that guarantee positions are describing something other than SEO. What a good company guarantees is the work, in the right order, reported transparently so you can see what moved.
What questions should I ask an SEO agency?
Start with: show me where I rank now, what will you change in 90 days, how do you measure success, can I log into the tools, who does the work, what is your Google Business Profile method, how do you build authority, what do you do about AI search, do you guarantee rankings, can I see results, what happens if I stop, and what does it cost.

Does an SEO company need to understand AI search?
Yes. A growing share of customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and Perplexity who to hire. A capable firm explains GEO and AEO, structures your site so AI can cite it, and measures AI visibility with a fixed set of real prompts tracked across engines.
What should be in an SEO contract?
Scope in writing, ownership of your site, content, accounts and data, admin access for you on your own profiles and tools, a stated reporting cadence, and a clean exit with a handover of everything.
How do I switch SEO companies without losing rankings?
Confirm admin access to your Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics, domain and hosting before giving notice, export your content, have the new firm audit before the old one leaves, keep tracking live, then hand over cleanly. Rankings drop from lost access or neglected profiles, not from changing agencies.
What makes Chicagoland SEO different?
It is 210 municipalities across five counties, and rankings are decided town by town. Proximity, wildly different competition between DuPage and Kendall, and large Spanish-speaking markets all shape the plan. A citywide approach misses where the calls come from.
